Various Artists - Battlecreek EP

This is it. A meeting of the minds the like of which has not been seen for decades. A benchmark release. A truly genre defining record. A soundclash of seismic proportions. We could go on, but we'll save you the yawns.

Suffice to say the The Battlecreek EP is the shizznit. Orchestrated by Deadly Avenger and released on his Illicit Recordings imprint, this EP is the product of four of today's hottest young artists and labels with a shared musical masterplan. And it goes a little something like this...

As the big beat bubble slowly deflates and trip hop limps lethargically into the sunset, Britain's dancefloors are hungry for something new. Dancefloor driven yet musically inventive, party rockin' but never cheesy, influenced by both hip hop and disco in varying amounts, ladies and
gentlemen we give you the sound of post big beat! (this is the best we could come up with, but you're all journalists so you should be able to do better). Now we've got that out the way, let us introduce you to the men with the plan:

Deadly Avenger (Illicit Recordings)
Straight outta Hinckley, Damon Baxter needs no introduction. With two classic EP's ('The Illicit EP' and 'King Tito's Gloves') already out on his own Illicit imprint, and mixes for the Stereophonics, Manic Street Preachers, Travis and Money Mark under his belt, he is one cool ruler.

Jadell (Ultimate Dilemma Recordings)
London's favourite B-Boy playboy, Jadell has made his name with a handful of classic singles on the immaculate Ultimate Dilemma Recordings. With his debut album, 'Gentleman's Leisure', ready to drop in June, the future's so bright he's gotta wear a golf visor.

Bronx Dogs (Marble Bar)
Again proud owners of their own record label, Richard Sen and Paul Eve have made the Bronx Dogs a name to be reckoned with through releases like 'Mambo Rock' and '212 / 313'.

Pepe Deluxé (Catskills)
Representing Finland are DJ Slow, Ja-Jazz and James Spectrum who together are Pepe Deluxé. With their debut album 'Super Sound' imminent on Catskills Records, these three Fins are so hot it hurts.

Reviews

Ministry

Four of the freshest post-big beat artists battle it out on one EP. Deadly Avenger's 'The Brawl' is the standout, with Pepe Deluxe's slo-mo hip hop nipping at it's heels, while Bronx Dogs novelty cut, the Sesame Street-sampling 'And The Letters Spell', provides fun for all the family before Jadell joins the party action too.

Mixmag

This month's undisputed winner features the post-big beat dream team of the Deadly Avenger, Bronx Dogs, Jadell and Pepe Deluxe, a combination unparalleled since Superman and Batman met the Fantastic Five. Deadly Avenger's high octane disco-funk workout is a top-notch continuation of his 'King Tito's Gloves' theme. Jadell also keeps it uptempo, mashing up James Brown, African wailing and a frantic percussion workout. The Dogs go with a Sesame Street funk theme, managing to get Big Bird to spell out their name. Clever.

Muzik

Verily, we are blessed: Deadly Avenger, Bronx Dogs, Jadell and Pepe Deluxe together, rubbishing the big beat blueprint and forging stunning breakbeat tracks. Deadly Avenger's steroidal disoc/ hip hop excercise 'The Brawl' is the finest and catchiest, but cuts by the Dogs and the 'Dell both rock a fat one. 5/5

NME (Single of the week)

Four of Europe's most thrilling new breakbeat assailants contribute near-impeccable tracks to this landmark release by the faultless Illicit stable. Scene player Jadell, Bronk Dogs and Finland's Pepe Deluxe dig deep for their finest filthy funk, but the winner by some stretch is Damon Baxter's mighty alias, Deadly Avenger. A prime slice of feverish disco bedlam, 'The Brawl' consolidates Baxter's position as the discerning dancer's superhero of choice. Let battle commence.

The Independent

One of the year's most essential records - and a groundbreaking record for Britain and, um, Finland. Deadly Avenger, Jadell, Bronx Dogs and Finnish nutters Pepe Deluxe each have a track to themselves in a full-on meltdown of hip-hop, breakbeat and even good-time dance vibes. 4/5
