Various Artists - Battlecreek III

Illicit’s critically acclaimed Battlecreek series continues, and part III is a real blinder. Orchestrated by Deadly Avenger, and released on his Illicit imprint this EP pulls together the talents of 4 of the UK’s brightest deckwrecking talents. Battlecreek III brings you 4 tracks of the best dancefloor driven, inventive (but never cheesy) party pieces. The brief is simple - tear it up. Step forward the men with the plan...

A1 The Nextmen ‘Midnight Method’:
Dom Search and Baloo need little introduction. Their album ’Moving Amongst The Madness’ earnt them props across the dance music fraternity. Their track for this EP is a funk infused groover. Definitely one for the hips! Cut up vocals and meandering basslines are the order of the day. One for prime time party floors.

A2 Kings Of The Wild Frontier ‘Theme from 17’: Are Malcolm Elsworth and John Tyrell have cut their teeth and made their names as DJ’s playing quality floors like Big Kahuna Burger, The Rizla Cafe @ Glastonbury, T-In-The-Park, and the V festivals, and a residency at the Dogstar. One of their rare recordings to vinyl, it’s all about the horns and the drums - brilliant!

B1 Deckwrecka & H.E.L ‘Countdown’:
Deckwrecka has been doing his thing since the age of 15, and his pedigree is beyond doubt. 3 albums in and his profile and reputation for purveying the finest quality beats is still steadfast. Joined here by H.E.L (need some info)their contribution is of the chunkiest variety. A mid pacer full of melody, sharp beats and underpinned by a filthy piano line.

B2 Boca45 ‘Steady Rocking’:
Boca45 is Scott Hendy (who is one half of Dynamo Productions with Portishead’s Andy Smith). Having recently committed to vinyl tracks for Illicit, Unique, Hombre, Super Slick Stereo Sounds and Freddy Fresh’s own Howlin’ imprint, 2001 was a big year. And with a 12 for John Stapleton’s Blow Pop label in the pipeline and this superheavyweight funk cut, 2002 looks to be heading the same way.

DJ

Battlecreek releases don’t come around very often, but when they do you know it’s time to start celebrating. Orchestrated by the Deadly Avenger and released on his Illicit label, they always contain a selection of the best funky breaks tracks around. ‘Volume III’ is another stunning collection, kicked off in fine cut-up style by The Nextmen’s bass heavy ‘Midnight Method’, a full-on party rocker. Next up are the elusive Kings Of The Wild Frontier, who celebrate another triumph with their horn soaked funk extravaganza ‘Theme From 17’. Then it’s the turn of Deckwrecka & H.E.L. who rip up their UK hip hop style to the max with ‘Countdown’. And bringing up the rear are the considerable talents of Boca 45 (Scott Hendy from Dynamo Productions), with a beat heavy, loop ridden, scratched up drum workout in the shape of ‘Steady Rocking’. Four top quality tracks and another bullseye for Battlecreek. Don’t miss this one. 5/5

Seven

Absolutely top-drawer four-way play on the ass-shaking tip makes for some pure good-time party starting. Kings Of The Wild Frontier just shade the honours with the spanking good jam ‘Theme From 17’ although The Nextmen, Deckwrecka & HEL and Boca 45 all do their thang with the potential to slay dancefloors in true hip-hop hoedown history. Pass on this one and you’ll be up Battlecreek without a paddle.
