Deadly Avenger - Day One / Punisher

Coming straight outta Hinkley, Leicestershire, Damon Baxter has never stuck to the well trodden and clearly signposted path to musical fame and fortune. Preferring to indulge his diverse tastes and interests than to stick rigidly to any plan, Deadly Avenger's maverick spirit makes him one of the most exciting and unpredictable British producers of recent times.

First attracting attention in the late '90s with his releases on Depth Charge's DC Recordings and on his own Illicit label, Deadly Avenger's unique blend of hip hop, electro, disco breaks and soundtrack science made him stand out from the post-big beat crowd. Remixes for the Manic Street Preachers, Travis and Money Mark followed and helped cement his reputation as a producer who was equally at home devestating dancefloors with twisted disco breaks as he was creating beautiful, string laden epics.

Over the last two years, Damon has steadily built the profile of his own Illicit label working with artists including The Wiseguys, Organic Audio, Jadell and Portishead's Andy Smith, and releasing the acclaimed 'Battlecreek EP' series. At the same time he has earned a reputation as a floor filling DJ at clubs and festivals all over the world, with his residency at London's Fabric Live providing the inspiration for a forthcoming mix album on the club's own label. Somehow he has also found the time to record his debut album which is set for release later this year, and is guaranteed to convert any remaining agnostics to the Deadly Avenger gospel.

'Punisher / Day One' is a tantalising taste of the pleasures to come. Showing the diverse range of sonic weaponry Deadly Avenger has in his arsenal, this two tracker shows two sides of Damon's musical personality. 'Punisher' does exactly what it says on the tin - piling up the pressure and showing no mercy to the dancefloor. 'Day One' shows a lighter touch, with Deadly laying down loose limbed funk for those 5am sessions.

Reviews

DJ Review 1

This awesome 12" shows off Deadly's ability to pull off two very different dancefloor fillers, one in the shape of bongo rocker 'Punisher', and the other in the summer-tinged beauty that is 'Day One'. 'Punisher' is a fierce, percussive-led journey with screeching guitars, the freshest of beats and an overall dramatic cinematic quality, whereas the flip offers a more laidback Balearic option with the awesome 'Day One', where jazzy guitars meet warm, funky beats, creating a very infectious sound. It's been a long wait but Deadly Avenger return with a tasty sampler in the form of this 12" preceeding an apparently stunning album. Can't wait to have a listen 4/5.

DJ Review 2

Marking his return with a bang, Deadly Avenger - undeniably one of the scene's brightest lights - hits hard with this excellent two tracker. 'Punisher' takes his traditional sample-crazed, breaks-laden sound and updates it with some firing electronic melodies and a serious percussion work out. Fresh as a summer meadow and just as inviting, dancefloors will love this. 'Day One' shows the Deadly diversity and twists off into warped house territory. Tripped out and funked up, late nite action is guaranteed from this lazy, beautiful cut. Taken from the forthcoming album, this is top stuff and shows just why Deadly Avenger is considered one of the best. 5/5

The Face

Big beat outsider fulfills his potential with two organic acid belters. 'Punisher' recasts Radiohead's 'National Anthem' as a housed-out biker flick theme on six hits of mescaline, while 'Day One' sounds like the Pointer Sisters being worked over by Luke Solomon and Kenny Hawkes, in a good, if not entirely tasteful, way.

Jockey Slut

Cor, he's a one, that Deadly Avenger. Nominally pegged as a breakbeat don of some renown he stays true to type with the aptly-titled 'Punisher'; a digital beat boogie suffused with a cinematic grandeur. Yet it's the 'in sound from way out' of 'Day One' that really flips wigs. A smooth house lick reminiscent of Miguel Migs and co, its wistful, yearning, super squiggle and all round 7am bonhomie just oozes class. Beatific and beautiful.

NME

On the strength of Deadly Avenger's excellent forthcoming album, it might be a tad unfair to praise this single so highly, but combine the tracks with the amazing packaging and it's hard not to. Here we have two examples of what the Avenger does best: a nice place between breakbeat and film score on the A, and pure sunshine bass on the B.
