Saville Robots - Am/Trax
They said one day the robots would take over, but no-one ever predicted this...
Lock up your dishwashers and tie up your toasters because the Savile Robots are here to liberate the machines. Armed with a neat line in twisted electro and robotic funk, this mysterious outfit look set to start the revolution on the dancefloor, before moving swiftly on to global domination.
Their plans have been a while in the making. From a secret lab buried deep under London town, this sartorially correct (but poorly spelt) crew have been building up a sonic arsenal for some time. This 12” is the result of their early attempts at aural fission and should not be taken lightly. ‘Am-Trax’ is a slice of glacial electro designed to inspire dissent amongst domestic appliances everywhere. On the flip ‘Robotic Daddy’ brings a glam rock stomp to proceedings and leads the march on Dixons, Currys and their repressive ilk.
Consider this delectable wipe clean 12” to be a warning shot. Further assaults are sure to follow. And yes - your turntable probably is looking at you funny...

Reviews
DJIn keeping with their name, the Saville Robots sound would appear to be more heavily electronic than most of Illicit’s output, but they do share a strong feel for the funk in common with label mates like Bronx Dogs and Deadly Avenger. The title track here is a chunky mid-tempo number, with fat buzzing electronic bass and lead lines doing the robo-funk business astride slamming breaks, while eerie synth washes and tricky percussion add atmosphere and energy. Warning: my computer started making funny noises when this was played. ‘Robotic Daddy’ takes a punchy b-line reminiscent of ‘The Humpty Dance’, some funky Prince-style stabs, loads of dorty synth noise and transforms it all into a silly but driving funk stomper with the aid of some thudding breaks. 4/5

A rather nice double helping of digital funk that should go down well at your next engagement. Doing the electro thing but not necessarily electro, our automated chums add some hefty bottom end to both minimally produced tracks, add touches of percussion, a little layering of oscillation and top with some airy pads. Square, Linear, spacious and simple, and along the lines of Weatherall and Tenniswood’s recent ‘Visons’ remix for Slam. Robots rule. 3.5/5
Sleaze Nation
Hair-triggered vinyl fetishists rejoice as the bumpy robo squall and digital glam-rock stomp of this double header comes sheathed in a handy wipe clean cover if things get a bit much. Which they very probably will.
