Description

Bruise - Girl's Best Friend

BRUISE are Isobel Morris (vocals and guitar), Jim Kimberley (drums, vocals & samples) and Grahame Skinner (bass).

Self taught and self educated, Isobel’s songs are in the maverick tradition. Songs with great spirit and intuitive feel propelled by a driving groove what has been described as both compelling and emotional, there is something insidiously persuasive about them. A little Patti Smith, a little Nico, but then again something all together other.

Isobel Morris does not compare. Her songs reflect a life of diverse experience. She has crossed continents several times. From her native Yorkshire, Isobel has travelled via the pork fields of Iowa to the ice fields of the Alaskan wilderness. It was in Anchorage that Isobel stumbled across her own glorious broken-stringed, open-tuned style.

In between times she got married, got divorced and got away.

Isobel experimented with musicians in various incarnations and situations but nothing really clicked until she was introduced to Jim and Grahame.
The musical understanding between the three was immediate as was the idea of the classic DIY ethic. In the surroundings of Jim’s east end council flat, using the lounge as a live room, dangling mics from light fittings, removing and laying carpets to get the right sound from the room - they have managed to create the organically gritty pioneering sound that is BRUISE.

Ho hum, another week, another soul destroying stack of records to plough through. From the outside, music journalism seems like a dream job: you get sent loads of free records, you get to see any band you want for free, and you get to hobnob with your heroes. The reality of course is somewhat different, but it’s churlish to complain. Suffice to say that it’s a rare occurrence to pull a record off the review pile, only to be left breathless and stunned after just one play; but this week presented just such an epiphany in the form of Bruise. Hearing Bruise for the first time can only be compared to hearing The Velvet Underground’s ‘White Light, White Heat’ for the first time. Not that they sound anything like VU of course; though there is a hint of Nico in Isobel Morris’ voice, it’s more a cross between Grace Slick, Joni Mitchell and the Mama’s And The Papa’s; but there is an undercurrent of spite and vitriol here that is never clearly enunciated, an untold depth that doesn’t call attention to itself, it’s just there, lurking, more felt than seen. Comparisons to Patti Smith have been made; they’re not too wide of the mark.
