Dynamo Productions - Showtime Vol II
Dynamo Productions is the holy union of two stalwarts of the Bristol hip hop scene, Andy Smith and Scott Hendy. Showtime Vol 2 is the second in the 3 part ‘Showtime’ series for Illicit, and what a slice of beats treats it is. They've delivered sublime instrumentals alongside blockrocking hip hop beats and scratch laden cut ups in the tradition of Double D & Steinski classic 'Lessons' series and DJ Shadow's 'The Number Song'.
Andy Smith's pedigree is beyond doubt, and his DJ'ing has become a vital part of Portishead's live set. The success of his album compilation 'The Document' on Go Beat / London Records back in the day has also seen him headlining a world tour in his own right. Scott Hendy's scratch n' cut skills are world-renowned. He has been a regular feature of the Bristol scene for over ten years, releasing acclaimed mix CD's for Cup Of Tea. As part of the Dope on Plastic team alongside John Stapleton, he has toured across the globe. He has also released records as Boca 45 on Hombre Recordings.
This Ep is interspersed with interludes, that reflect the very British influences of this package Deft touches that add to the package. Casbah is a mainfloor primetimer, loads of cut ups and jacking beats. Gotta Groove is self explanitory - a top slice of melodic mid pace beats. Hit The Floor does exactly what it says on the tin, Dynamo & Beanz Stu is also a midpacer full of soul, with Three Dimensional rounding things off in a chilled beats stylee.
Their first UK track as Dynamo Productions, 'Busta Beat', cropped up on the 'Battlecreek II' EP, released on Deadly Avenger's Illicit Recordings imprint. They released their first EP as Dynamo Productions 'Showtime Vol. 1' on the same label. Put together as an antidote to the trippy, sour edge of British hip hop, the EP showcased Dynamo's old school cut 'n paste party hip hop in fine style, earning them plaudits across the board.
Andy and Scott really are two of the most truly talented turntablists around. They don't only play the records, they scratch with them and cut in some of the most unlikely tunes you'll ever hear on the dancefloor. Those who've heard 'The Document' will know what to expect. Their burgeoning live reputation has been further enhanced by tours of Europe and North America. They also recently toured Australia as part of the Vibes On A Summers Day festival, supporting Groove Armada regularly playing to crowds of over 5,000 people.
Andy and Scott's connection with Illicit continues, with Andy compiling the anticipated 'The Document 2' for Illicit, and Scott's Boca 45 contributing a track for the current 'Battlecreek III' EP.

Reviews
DJAndy Smith and Scott Hendy cross the streams, align the forcefields and let rip on these five frabjous slabs o’ funk seeped in US grooves but somehow coloured by a totally English vibe. ‘Casbah’ is hooj, irresistibly jacked up beats sprayed and diffused by nagging needling cut-ups. ‘Gotta Groove’ comes sauntering out of the mess with a rose in it’s teeth and whips you from dancefloor to alleyway before you’ve got time to phone your mum. ‘Hit The Floor’ hits a dizzying crush of Daisy-age beats and Coldcut-style aural abuse, serving up loops and beats that sound too damn classic to be this damn unplaceable, before ‘Dynamo & Beanz Stu’ and ‘Three Dimensional’ send you spinning off to Polynesia with some splendidly chilled-to-fuck Pacific Rim dreaminess. At least, that’s where it took me – pure teleportation through sound. Choose your destination. 4/5

Portishead’s Andy Smith and Scott ‘Boca 45’ Hendy are the Dynamo duo, with enough Batman and Robin partner power to make hip-hoppers shout ‘Holy neck-snapping blunted beats!’. Cut-ups, stooped soundbites, call ‘n’ response hollers, fly basses, bad-assed breaks and soothing atmospherics – all wrapped up in a ‘shake watcha mama give ya before mam gets jealous and wants some too’ intelligence made for both extremes of your evening out locking and popping. Pre, peak and post party purity that is sheer Dynamo dynamite.
