Deadly Avenger - We Took Pelham

'Punisher / Day One' was lauded as a welcome return to form by all the press, with rave reviews across the board, including three in DJ magazine alone! The acclaim is set to continue with the release of 'We Took Pelham' which is seen by many as the definitive Deadly Avenger tune.

Coming straight outta Hinkley, Leicestershire, Damon Baxter has never stuck to the well trodden and clearly signposted path to musical fame and fortune. Preferring to indulge his diverse tastes and interests than to stick rigidly to any plan, Deadly Avenger's maverick spirit makes him one of the most exciting and unpredictable British producers of recent times.

First attracting attention in the late '90s with his releases on Depth Charge's DC Recordings and on his own Illicit label, Deadly Avenger's unique blend of hip hop, electro, disco breaks and soundtrack science made him stand out from the post-big beat crowd. Remixes for the Manic Street Preachers, Travis and Money Mark followed and helped cement his reputation as a producer who was equally at home devestating dancefloors with twisted disco breaks as he was creating beautiful, string laden epics.

Over the last two years, Damon has steadily built the profile of his own Illicit label working with artists including The Wiseguys, Organic Audio, Jadell and Portishead's Andy Smith, and releasing the acclaimed 'Battlecreek EP' series. At the same time he has earned a reputation as a floor filling DJ at clubs and festivals all over the world, with his residency at London's Fabric Live providing the inspiration for a forthcoming mix album on the club's own label. Somehow he has also found the time to record his debut album which is set for release at the

Reviews

BBM

Quite the obsessive film buff is our Damon Baxter aka Deadly Avenger. So on 'We Took Pelham', a track originally built around Bill Conti's 'Going The Distance', from the Rocky Soundtrack, expect the usual grandiose, cinematic bombast and visions of Sly Stallone skipping like a big girls blouse in tight pants 7/10

Buzz

Sounding more at home at the movie theatre than on the dancefloor this is pure cinematic stuff from DJ, remixer and dance producer Damon Baxter. The track engulfs you in its sweeping grandiosity whilst giving a knowing nod to a more familiar club sound. Dramatic big music that towers over much of the lazy beat dance scene 3/5

Jockey Slut

Originally the orchestral bits were from 'Going The Distance' from the 'Rocky' soundtrack; here they've been replaced by a full orchestra from Budapest. Well, why not? The result is a dramatic, sweeping leftfield cut that still sounds like a soundtrack - in a good way. Elsewhere 'The Quest' is suitably Arabian.

Update

Deadly Avenger has drafted in a 47-piece Hungarian orchestra to help him re-vamp 'We Took Pelham'. The result is majestic and very Bondesque - 007 gets funky. New track 'The Quest' is also very cinematic, filled with eastern mystery and promise. On the flip you'll find Future Sound of London's 'Cosmic Jukebox' mix of 'Day One'.
