Half artist album, half compilation, this three-disc box set is the perfect showcase for one of Britain’s unsung DJ heroes., Damon Baxter. As Deadly Avenger, Damon has put together some of the most dazzling DJ sets imaginable. Hip-hop, breaks, funk, punk, in fact whatever sounds good, all come together, some records spending a scant few seconds on the deck before Damon mixes in a new track with almost supernatural speed and pinpoint precision. ‘Thelasttimeidothisfornothing’ is all about Damon’s own music though, be it his Deadly Avenger tunes or tracks released on his soon-to-be-no-more label Illicit. This final release is a fitting swansong that’s acted as a haven for underground breakbeat and hip-hop producers. CD one is worth it’s price alone. It’s a selection of rare Deadly Avenger cuts, many of which appear here for the first time on CD. Tracks such as ‘King Tito’s Gloves’ are cinematically stunning, outshining anything the Chemical Brothers have done in years. CD two brings together the three ‘Battlecreek’ Eps, with tracks from Damon sitting alongside cuts by Dynamo Productions and Pepe Deluxe, while CD three trawls Illicit’s back catalogue for some other little gems, including the massive ‘Be Faithful’ by Fatman Scoop, a track discovered by Damon and co and then passed on to the majors. It’s sad to see Illicit go, but in ‘Thelasttime…’ we’ve got something to celebrate.
